Contemporary Afro-Hispanic language
Throughout the Americas there are several Afro-descendent speech communities in which previous contacts between Spanish and African languages have resulted in distinctive ethno-linguistic varieties. The study of contemporary Afro-Hispanic language complements historical reconstruction, which often depends on literary imitations of dubious authenticity. In addition to having analyzed field data from Afro-descendent communities in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Venezuela, Chile, Peru, and Paraguay, I am engaged in ongoing research in the following speech communities (follow the links):
